In the summer of 1996, Mike Company 3/7 1st Division, U.S. Marines under Captain Van Riper’s command from Vietnam 68-69, had a reunion at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA. Captain Van Riper is now a Lieutenant General and Commandant of the Quantico Marine Corps base. Mike Company was treated with kindness and respect by the young Marines at the base in Quantico. Quantico is the Marine Corps base that trains Marine Corps officers. The old Mike Company Marines were given the opportunity to practice with the various simulated weapons. The group also participated in an M16 accuracy contest at the firing range. Two former Marines David Huffman and red head Wayne Vines decided to change names before the contest started. The score ranged from 0 to 50 with 50 being the highest. The new David Huffman scored 43 on the rifle range; the new Wayne Vines scored 7. After the contest, awards were given out to the participants with the most accuracy. Before the awards were given out, David Huffman and Wayne Vines took back their own names. David Huffman won second place beating not only other older former Marines from Mike Company; he beat 5 of the younger Marines. Everyone cheered as this old blind Marine went up to obtain his second place prize: a Marine Corps t-shirt. Wayne Vines scored last place with some help. Even David Huffman’s six year old son scored better than Vines did. It took a while for the other Marines to figure out how the old former blind Marine did it. Does it have to do with the orneriness behind the red head and the blind guy?!
