After becoming blind in Vietnam, Huffman was hyper-vigilant.  He “needed to get outside and walk”.  He would take a bus in town from his sisters in Simon’s Gardens, New Castle, DE to Wilmington, DE.  Sometimes he would hitchhike.  What would interest a young blind man into hitchhiking?  Female companions, of course; however Huffman could get there: bus, cab or hitchhiking.  He recalls one time having his thumb out on I95 right after the turnpike was built.  Huffman did run into one problem.  He looked healthy in the late 60’s and early 70’s after he was blinded.  Even though he was using a white cane, it was easy to conclude he was faking it.  Some people would pick him up and be very helpful; others would get pissed, why would this man fake being blind in order to get a ride?  He deserves to get run over. They would show their displeasure by beeping their horns.
