The weekend beginning Thursday, the 27th of September 2012 was quite different.  Huffman and his wife, Cheryl took his son Will (22) out for dinner and to shop for his birthday present September 27th. in Parkersburg, WV after work at his law office.  Huffman worked Friday, the 28th; then that after work the couple drove to Roanoke, Virginia to enjoy a birthday party with his grandson, Cooper who turned five on September 29th, 2012.  Huffman’s son Keith had all three of his children to enjoy the birthday with Cooper on the 29th.  After spending the night the 28th the grandparents, his son Keith and the three grandchildren went out to lunch; then went to pick out a dog for the family, then the kids celebrated at Chuck E Cheese, Toys R Us, and then they all went to Keith’s office for Cooper’s birthday song and cake.

September 29th, 1968 is when David Huffman and Terry Barnette were blown up in a booby trap together in Vietnam.  Huffman and Barnette have one eye between them.  Huffman’s totally blind.  After driving back from visiting with the grandchildren the evening of September 29th, 2012; then Sunday, September 30th, 2012 Huffman and his wife, Cheryl’s sixth anniversary; the couple has been together 13 years.  Huffman and Cheryl celebrated with having brunch at the Blennerhassett with friends, Ron and Anna, in Parkersburg, West Virginia.  It so happened to be Huffman’s sister Nancy and John’s anniversary as well.  In Delaware, John and Nancy celebrated theirs.

Seventeen years ago, May 21st, 1995; Huffman gave his daughter Francis when he was raising her, a black cat: Sebastian.  During the last several months Sebastian went blind as a result of kidney disease.   During those last several months of Sebastian’s life Frankie had both a blind dad and a blind cat.  Sebastian died September 29th, 2012; the day Huffman was wounded in Vietnam along with Barnette.   For years Sebastian knew about Huffman’s blindness. She would jump up on the couch, come over, and sit on his lap.  Even after Sebastian was blind the last several months like Huffman, Sebastian would still crawl on his lap.

Dates seem to have meaning around Huffman.  Frankie’s husband Bob’s father died November 24th, 2010.  Huffman’s sister in law Jean died on his birthday, November 24th, 2003 as well.  Jean was the wife of Eddie, the older brother who was murdered D-Day, December 7th, 1971. The three Vietnam Veteran brothers, Al-Navy; David-Marines, and Raymond-Army carried on.

After being blinded in Vietnam, Huffman stayed with his sister Mary and was in a car accident on her birthday, February 26th, 1970.  Mary committed suicide seven days after she gave birth to Frankie, May 21st 1978.  Huffman and his first wife, Sherry, adopted Frankie.  Thirty-four years later, Frankie’s buried her blind cat Sebastian in her back yard in Broomall, Pennsylvania.  Frankie has a husband, Bob; and two sons, Sean and Shane.  She loves all of them including her blind dad and her blind cat that just died.  When asked what he thought of Frankie having a blind cat and a blind dad at the same time, Huffman says, “Sebastian and I have something in common besides being blind; a wonderful daughter and a loving cat owner.  I think maybe I’ll have some catnip in memory of Sebastian.  I wonder what Sebastian thinks about her crazy Uncle Terry Barnette .  He has one eye; Sebastian can go either way.  What a crazy weekend, including the death of Sebastian. Memories of Sebastian will be “seen” forver.”
